We would like to update our website and as a small Foundation working with families and young people bereaved by youth murder we appeal to 2 very different audiences. Would you recommend a theme that could still send out our message without people coming and leaving our site without looking around.

Thank you for your expertise and sharing with others.

    1. Tracey,

With themes you get overall layout and some functionality but your content (text, images, videos, events, project pages, etc) are the ones that will keep your visitors on your website as long as possible. Most of these themes comes with drag & drop visual page builder, so you can add and format your content in many different ways but this part is completely up to you and your foundation to come up with content that your community cares about.

Some of themes listed above are sold hundreds and and even thousands of times which means that most non-profit foundation websites should look the same but they are not and that’s why content is so important and theme comes long after. Also your content is part of your design and user experience, so pay as much attention to your content as you can and then spend some more.
It might sound a bit harsh but I have seen so many beautiful and professional looking themes used to create another website that none one will visit and even if someone will visit it then that’s going to be their last visit and user will never share your website with others via social media or word of mouth.

Let me know if this helps and if you have any other questions about these or any other WordPress themes. Sorry again for my harsh answer.

      1. Hello, I’m looking for something that looks like this kind of site, gofundme.com Do you have something to advise me? thank you

  2. Hi Aigars,

Can you please assist – is there a list of WP themes for non-for-profit associations? Not so much a charity – more of an organisation that has hundreds of members – like a Chamber of Commerce or the like.

    Look forward to your reply,
    Many thanks 🙂 Dima

    1. Dima,

Some of above themes can be easily used for not-for-profit associations. Things such as donations are just part of these themes that can be easily disabled. WordPress themes are flexible enough and most functionality is completely optional.

If these themes doesn’t have the functionality you are looking for you can also check this or this theme collection. On these two theme collections you will find multipurpose themes that are even more flexible than ones listed above.

  3. Hi Aigars,

Hoping you can help! First and foremost, this is a great list of non-profit based WordPress themed sites! Unfortunately, I don’t think any of them match our needs. The Latin Ballet of Virginia is a culturally based non-profit organization that uses dance as a tool for educating the public on Spanish culture, as well as, offering regular dance classes, along with having a very strong senior dance company that tours the world. The website needs a major update and also needs to be responsive /mobile friendly. Would you be able to recommend any WordPress themes that can provide what we need?

    Thanks so much,
    Ana

    1. Ana,

Most of these themes are very flexible and all features can be easily disabled and enabled when needed. If you don’t like slider, donation section, event calendar or anything else you can just remove it (all these features are actually disabled by default and you need to enable them specifically if you want to or leave them disabled).

If you can’t find the right theme on this collection I would recommend to look here. On this theme collection you will find dozens of multipurpose themes that comes with visual drag & drop page builder that will allow you to build any kind of website without touching a code. These themes offers limitless options but yet they are very easy to configure and use.

  4. Could you please help me discern what theme would be good for a
newly formed nonprofit animal sanctuary that for now is focusing on
using the website to inform about humane education, to teach through a blog,
and that will have a gallery of photos. I will be looking at setting up a donation page.
I want to make sure that it is responsive and user/mobile friendly on all devices.
I am new to building a website so I need a theme that is relatively simple to create.

    Thank you,
    Diane

    1. Diane,

      Thank you for your comment!

Any theme listed above will get the job done for you. Since you are looking for a very basic functionality you might want to start your research with blog themes. From there you can install some PayPal based WordPress donation plugin and gallery plugin and you are good to go. Above listed themes have many other features that you won’t use therefore combining a simple blog theme with plugins would be a simpler solution.

  5. Linda Salani says:

Is there a theme with a vertical menu?

    1. Hello Linda,

It depends what you buy by vertical menu. All above listed themes does have a sidebar in which you can add WordPress custom menu which will help you to create a vertical menu. If you mean something else, please let me know more details and I will try to help you from there.

  6. Hi Aigars

Great collection of nonprofit and charity themes and i have selected outreach theme for my site.

  7. Selvam,

    Thank you for your comment!

Outreach theme is around for a while now and have proven to be very successful theme and is used by many churches and other non profit organizations. It is very easy to setup and customize as it doesn’t have thousands of unnecessary features while it gets the job done and still provides some freedom for customizations.

  8. hard8hopping says:

What’s a good WP responsive theme for a charity that wants to publish in two languages, i.e. English and Japanese?

  9. Almost all themes on this collection are multilingual ready, so you can translate it in any language and use several languages all at once. When you choose the right theme make sure to check if this theme is WPML (the best and by far the most popular multilingual solution for WordPress) compatible. All themes that have this compatibility will clearly state that in their listing pages. However, if they haven’t mentioned WPML there is still chance that you will be able to translate it in any given language by using this plugin as it is very flexible and doesn’t require much knowledge to setup and configure.

  10. Hi Aigars

Many thanks for this list of stylish and functional thems for non profit organisation. Anyway I’m currently working on updating the look of our mosque website and thus am looking for a theme with such main features on its main page:
    1. a donation slider
    2. newsletter subscription
    3. post a message
    3. facebook feed

I’m currently inclined towards the Help theme but apparently only the first two features are available in the demo. Do you think I could include other widgets for the last two desired features or could you probably suggest any other themes that possess all those features by default? Thanks again.

    1. Farid,

      1. What did you mean by “Donation Slider”?
      2. Newsletter subscriptions are not part of theme. There are many third party plugins and services that will help you with that. For example we are using Mailchimp for our website.
      3. All themes does have a news/blog section where you can post your updates.
      4. Facebook feed is not part of WordPress or any plugins. You can add Facebook feed on your website using their default widget which is free to use and easy to setup or use one or many Facebook plugins for WordPress.

Your requirements are so broad that you can use almost any theme listed above as you are more looking for 3rd party services and not WordPress theme functionality.

      1. Hi Aigars

Thanks for your prompt reply! Sorry it’s my bad that I didn’t explain my thoughts clearly. For the donation slider, actually I was referring to the graph which can show the amount of collected donation with respect to the targeted amount. Meanwhile for my third question I was actually referring to the contact us form. Anyway I do agree on your final answers that those desired plugins are available from other 3rd party services. Thanks again.

        1. Farid,

There are many free plugins that you can use to get “donation slider” but there are also themes that has it by default such as Charitas and Rise. But I would recommend to look for theme that you really like from design perspective and then use some of the free donation plugins if this functionality is not available by default.

  11. Looking for a theme that allows ‘sponsorship’ ie having a sponsored child / family / village. The members can log in and follow the sponsored group (or receive emails from updates posted by the group), set up regular payments, make additional donations etc. Seems like an obvious functionality but I can’t see any of the above doing this .. any suggestions?

    1. Jamie,

You are missing one important thing here – payments are not handled by WordPress itself but some third party gateway such as PayPal or other. Of course payment buttons are visible inside your website but once clicked your visitors will be sent to this third party payment service and the rest will be handled by them. Instead of looking for theme that supports regular payments look for a payment service that offers this kind of options. Then you will be able to use any theme listed above.

  12. filzakhan says:

nice collection of themes. i see all the the theme but advocator theme is my favorite theme. thanks to shearing with us.

  13. There are a few key features that we require and I still am unsure which of the templates would go closest to meeting these criteria.

The overall website is a crowdfunding site for wildlife projects.

We need a website that has:
    1. Profile page for each project.
    2. Profile page for each donor where they get a history of the donations they have made to the various projects.
    3. Some sort of counter that details the donations raised per project and through the website as a whole.
    4. Advanced social media integration.

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

  14. Hi,

I am new to WordPress but am a c++ programmer and have used Dreamweaver CS5.5. I want to build a website to support the cancer research we are doing using computers to model, simulate and ultimately cure cancers using computer aided design and analysis. Looking at all these themes, its a bit overwhelming as to which to choose. I want one that looks something like the American Cancer Society but for a much smaller organization.

Any advice here or by email (since I may not find this site again) would be greatly appreciated.

  15. Hello ,

I would like to buy a theme for an association, but my website dons’t need a sponsor donation .

I need a theme for child education, disabilities, … and a theme which can have the pluggins Accessibility Widget or WP Accessibility and multilanguages

    Can you suggest one?

    1. Noshika.

You can make any theme multilingual by using plugin called WPML, which is by far the most popular multilingual plugin for WordPress. You can find more info about this amazing plugin here.

Accessibility Widget and WP Accessibility will work with any of above listed themes, so no problem with that.

All features such as donation buttons are optional and can be disabled on all themes. Therefore you can go ahead and choose theme that you like the most from design perspective.

  16. Chris Hall says:

    Hi there

An excellent set of WP themes for NfP organisations, and we really love Philanthropy theme.

We’re a NfP pre-hospital care NGO based in NE Thailand (very much in our infancy although we have a great group of volunteers who have worked with other ambulance NGO’s in the past).

I’d love to use your theme for our wordpress site but at the moment, we’re not cash rich!

Do you ever provide at no charge? We’d happily feature your support for us on the website!

    Regards

    Chris Hall

  17. Seth Meshko says:

I tried the Awaken theme from Chimp Studio and it is a complete mess. The social media login doesn’t work. There is a flaw in the code that won’t allow you to see or post any images from your media library. The donation page that should be generated by creating a “cause” doesn’t get created so none of you causes are actually published. The support for the Awaken theme is horrendous. They are incredibly incompetent and unresponsive. At last communication with them, they recognized that the theme was flawed and asked that I bear with them until they release an update to the theme, meanwhile I guess I am just supposed to have a non-functional site.

Do not buy the Awaken theme. It is junk.

    1. Seth,

I am sorry to hear about your experience with Awaken theme. This is the firs time we hear some bad things about and hopefully last one. Will notify developers to see what they have to say about this problem. It definitely shouldn’t be like that for a premium theme.

  18. Hi, I’m Christy

I’ve been reading your posts and I have found them super helpful! I’m about to embark on building my own website. Which theme will enable me to have a menu something like Amnesty International and Charity:Water – I’m not sure how to describe it? The box is at the top and you click it for a drop down menu.

    Thanks,
    Christy

  19. I just bought Alone theme, and feeling happy with this theme. Hight recommend Alone theme.

  20. Susan Fitzmaurice says:

Looking to reinvent an organization’s websites, All these are quite beautiful, but I am saddened that more attention isn’t given to accessibility by their creators. I cross checked the most recommended accessible themes with your themes and none match. Looking for a theme that addresses WCAG 11 requirements. Any suggestions?

    1. Susan,

Unfortunately, I am not sure if any of these themes passes WCAG 11 requirements or not. I’m definitely not an expert in this field. What i do know is that WordPress now does support WCAG by default and you can read more about it here. However, it doesn’t mean that all themes will comply perfectly fine.

  23. Brian Taylor says:

Are the themes able to be edited, to add more customization?

There are plenty of customization options for these themes but if you are looking for the most flexible themes you might want to start your research here.

  25. Karl Dumas says:

We currently use Divi Theme/Builder for our website and I want to incorporate a Funding capability. Since this topic is THEMES how do incorporate one of these themes into our Divi theme?

    Thanks.

    1. Karl,

In your case the only solution is to use some plugins such as these since it is not possible to just copy/paste functionality from some other themes.

  26. Thank you for the many great themes for non-profits. We are an agriculture NGO working to support subsistence farmers in eastern Indonesia. I have little experience at setting up a website but I am enthusiastic to start now. I just installed WordPress 6.6 and tried to download the themes you mentioned above. Unfortunately none of them are displayed in this version of WordPress. Please advise on how I can download one or more of these great websites. I hope you can help. Many thanks, Ted

    1. Ted,

All above-listed themes are compatible with WordPress 6.6+ We keep this listed updated all the time. If some themes are left behind and no longer support the latest version of WordPress we remove it from the list.

  27. Dominika Zapolnik says:

I’m wondering if these sites support accessibility; something like a screen reader, or ability to create larger fonts, etc.
Thanks for any help you can provide,
    Dominika

    1. Dominika,

Most themes do support accessibility such as screen readers but not all of them. Let me know themes that you have shortlisted and will make sure to check if they have a proper accessibility in place.

  28. John Stavrou says:

    Hi everyone
I am setting up a fund for a 4yo girl and her mother. They are both blind and I am trying to work out what would be the best theme to raise funds for them. They both live in a third world country ghetto and I really want to help them. They both need constant medication and I want to also raise funds to have some specialized stem cell treatment done.
I want to include pics and videos of them on the site along with the ability to raise funds in two ways. First for their every day needs and a second fund to reach the required amount for the stem cell treatment. It would be great if the daily needs fund could be a monthly recurring donation and the therapy fund to be target oriented.

If any one can suggest a theme that would be inline with what we are doing please give me a kind push into the right direction.
    Thanks in advance
    John

    1. John,

Instead of building a website I would recommend creating a campaign on GoFundMe. That way you will get much greater exposure and will save a lot of time trying to build a website that very few people will visit unless you have some marketing plan in place.

Hello, Is there a nonprofit theme that will allow me to change the photo on the first page or landing page?
Thanks for a solution fhat is quick and fairly simple.

    1. Patricie,

You can change everything you can see on theme previews. It includes images, text, video and everything else. In most cases images that you see on those previews are not included with the theme itself. They are for preview purpose only. Once you start building your website you absolutely must use your own images.

  30. Thank you for a wonderful non-profit collection, these themes are really nice. 🙂

  31. I would like to get a website done for a local Senior Club. I just feel that the Seniors are left behind, they still need to socialize but how do they know what’s on around them? I’ve been approached by a Seniors Club who would like to get a website done where they have all possible activities, times when they gather together on the site. It has to be of course very simple, straight forward, no fancy design, they just find what they look for. Can anyone recommend a good theme?

  32. Excellent breakdown of themes, Aigars! It’s exactly what I was looking for. I haven’t set up a WP site yet and was wondering about which package I would need for these themes (looking at HelpingHands specifically). Free, Personal, Premium, and Business are all options from WP. The description of each includes themes but I have a feeling there is some fine print in there that I’m overlooking. Would you be so kind as to provide some advice on selecting a WP package that would provide functionality for the themes you have listed?

    Thanks,

    ken

    1. If you are looking to use HelpingHands or any other third party theme your only option with WordPress.com is to use their business package. There is a major difference between self-hosted WordPress and service available from WordPress.com. You can read more about it here.
But in short, WordPress.com offers to use very limited selection of themes unless you upgrade to Business plan which is rather expensive. With self-hosted WordPress you can choose any themes that are out there.

I am looking for a template to build a website in support of an Art Song project. The functionality that we want includes:
1, a donation button linked to PayPal (that can be disabled when we reach our funding goal)
    2. a shop
    3. the ability to play parts of songs from the project
    4. ability to link to iTunes to sell the recordings
    Thanks,
    Beth

    1. Elizabeth,

You can use any of above listed themes or even these. Themes are all about design and very little about functionality and that’s what plugins are for. In your case you need a theme that supports WooCommerce and the rest cone be done using various free plugins.

  34. Ponka,

This isn’t the list for free themes. You can find them here instead.

  35. I’m looking for a theme we can use for a charity bike ride/walk. We want our participants to be able to register and create their own fundraising pages for the event which they can share with their friends and families to raise funds on our behalf (peer to peer fundraising). It’s a bit different than crowd-funding as we don’t want people to set up their own campaigns but instead fundraise under the bike ride or walk umbrella. Any suggestions on themes for that?

    Thanks!

  36. FYI, Benevolence isn’t free. They want you to pay for hosting to even download the freemium version, so it shouldn’t be on a list of “free” themes.

  37. Joanna Laznicka says:

Thank you for posting this. I own a website and today one of our readers who knows I use WP was asking me which theme they should use for their new charity blog. I am a big Genesis theme user so didn’t know much about other themes outside of them. This article was perfect for me to forward to them. Thank you for writing it.

    Hi,
I work for a non-profit org that offers film classes and has weekly film screenings. We are looking for a theme that offers a nice events module and classes module (ticket sales are done on a third party site). Do you have any recommendations?
    Thanks!

  39. I want to find a child sponsorship theme that lets individual donors choose what child they want to support.
Also, it needs to be able to accept donations.
    Do you have a recommendation?

  40. Andy Laub says:

Thank you so much for the list of 33 themes for nonprofits. They all do look wonderful.

We are Lift Up Nepal. We engage sponsors and mentors to communicate with their sponsored students. The students speak English and are age 15 and older. So your mention of “sponsors sections” intrigued me.

Could you point me in the direction of the themes that have the sponsor sections? I’d like to review the features.

We will also be presenting a lot of photography, but it looks like all the themes can handle that well.

    Thanks so much,

    Andy

    1. Andy,

Since all themes come with a drag and drop page builders such as Elementor or WPBakery Page Builder you can easily build any page you need including sponsors page or section.
No need to look specifically for a theme that has a page like that already since you can always create one on your own using drag and drop builder.

  41. Hi,

I run a small sustainable seafood education nonprofit, bringing the message of why knowing where seafood comes from matters to classrooms and communities. My current WP theme is no longer supported and stuff is breaking. I’m looking for a clean site that is visually appealing, not too busy, supports blogs and takes donations and is easy to manage on the backend (ie, adding blogs, photos, new pages, links to Youtube channel, podcasts etc.)

    What do you recommend?

    Thanks,
    Colles

    1. Hey Colles,

I looked up your theme Lora and indeed, it has been discontinued and should be replaced because it might cause potential security issues down the line.
My personal recommendation would be Webify theme which has a similar structure to what you have now and it does support donations too.
