26 Best Free Shopify Themes For Every Niche
Every free Shopify theme on this list was opened on the Shopify Theme Store before publishing. The ones Shopify has retired have been removed rather than left to rot.
That matters more than it sounds. Shopify has quietly pulled most of the free themes that roundups still recommend: Debut, Brooklyn, Narrative, Venture, Boundless, Supply, Simple and Minimal all return a “page could not be found” error on the Theme Store today. If a list still sends you to those, nobody has opened it in years.
Here is the current picture instead. Shopify offers 24 free themes, all built in-house, and they now split into two generations: the newer Horizon collection, which supports nested theme blocks, and the earlier Online Store 2.0 set, which does not. Alongside them sit Fashe and Furn, our own free themes, and the only two options here you can download as zip files and install without going through the Theme Store at all.
Shopify runs close to 4 million online stores worldwide, but its free theme catalogue stays deliberately small, and picking from it is mostly a question of what you sell. Each theme below says which kind of store it suits, with a working demo link.
Free Shopify Themes You Can Download as a Zip
Shopify themes are normally installed from the Theme Store, which means you cannot read the code before you commit to it and you never hold your own copy. Two themes here are the exception. Fashe and Furn both ship as zip files you upload yourself, with the full source published on GitHub, so you can read the code before you commit to it and keep your own copy of it afterwards.
1. Fashe
Fashe is Colorlib’s free Shopify theme for fashion, apparel and accessory stores. Version 2.0 was rebuilt from scratch rather than patched: the 2018 original was a vintage, pre–Online Store 2.0 theme you could only edit on the homepage, and it pulled jQuery, Bootstrap, four icon fonts and three carousel libraries off external CDNs. None of that survives.

It sits on theme blocks, the same architecture generation as Shopify’s own Horizon themes, so blocks can be reordered and nested anywhere — including on the product page. Carousels are CSS scroll-snap, drawers are native dialog elements and icons are inline SVG, so the theme makes no external requests at all.

The design is editorial and image-led, so it flatters stores where the product has to sell itself: clothing labels, bags, jewellery, footwear and small boutiques. If you sell hundreds of near-identical SKUs where dense listings matter more than art direction, one of the Shopify themes below will suit you better. It ships in English only, though both locale files are fully keyed, so adding a language is a translation job rather than a code one.

Furn is Colorlib’s free Shopify theme for furniture, homeware and interiors stores, and the second theme here that arrives as a zip instead of an install button. Shopify has its own furniture theme in Dwell, further down this list, and Dwell is the prettier catalogue; Furn is the one that hands you the source and is built around how a large, considered purchase actually gets made.
Furniture buyers measure a room, compare finishes, worry about the stairs and come back three times before ordering, usually on a different device each time. So finish and size swatches sit next to the price rather than in a dropdown, dimensions and delivery windows live in collapsible rows that do not push the buy button below the fold, and stock status sits beside it so a twelve-week lead time is not a surprise at checkout.
- Tabbed product grid — a homepage section where each tab is one of your collections, so someone who came for the bedroom is one tap from the dining room. Every panel renders with the page, so switching costs no request and works with JavaScript off.

Shopify’s Horizon Collection: The Newest Free Themes
These ten themes share Shopify’s newest architecture. The practical difference is nested theme blocks: instead of picking from a fixed set of sections, you can place blocks inside other blocks and build a layout without touching Liquid. If you are starting a store now and have no particular reason to prefer an older theme, start here.
3. Horizon
Horizon is Shopify’s flagship theme and the head of the collection that shares its name, so it is the reference build for everything newer in the free lineup. Large product cards, modern typefaces and a deliberately plain out-of-the-box setup mean you can publish a credible storefront before you have finished writing your product copy. Pick it when you want the current architecture with the fewest decisions to make.

They are still supported, still free, and in several cases still the better answer: Trade is the only free theme built for wholesale, and Studio is the only one designed around artists rather than products. What they lack is nested theme blocks, so ambitious layouts take more work.
13. Dawn
Dawn was Shopify’s default theme for years and remains the most widely deployed free option, which makes it the best-documented starting point when you expect to hire help later. Large imagery, crisp lines and simplified fonts keep attention on the product, and the product page is deliberately media-forward. It is plain by design, so expect to bring your own art direction.

Can you download a Shopify theme as a zip file?
Yes, but only for themes distributed outside the Theme Store. Anything you install from themes.shopify.com is added to your store directly and never handed to you as a file. Fashe and Furn are both downloadable as zips, which you upload under Online Store → Themes → Add theme → Upload zip. If you already run a theme and want a backup of it, open the actions menu for it in your Shopify admin and choose Download theme file; Shopify sends the .zip to the email address on your staff login.
Are there free Shopify themes on GitHub?
A few. Shopify publishes both Dawn and Horizon as open repositories, and Fashe and Furn both have their full source on GitHub with tagged releases you can download. Beyond those the pickings are thin, because a Shopify theme is only useful attached to a store, so most authors distribute through the Theme Store instead. Treat any other GitHub repository claiming to host paid themes as pirated.
Can you get premium Shopify themes for free?
Not legitimately. Sites offering “nulled” or cracked copies of paid themes are distributing modified code, and the modifications are the point — injected scripts in a checkout flow are a direct route to your customers’ data. You also get no updates, no support, and a theme that will break at the next Shopify platform change. If the paid themes are out of budget, the 26 free themes above are genuinely free and genuinely maintained.
How many free Shopify themes are there?
Shopify currently offers 24 free themes, all built and maintained in-house. That number moves: Shopify has retired the eight free themes listed in the question below, and added the Horizon collection since. Third-party free Shopify themes exist but are rare, which is why the free half of this list runs to 26 entries rather than hundreds.
What happened to Debut, Brooklyn and the other old free themes?
Shopify retired them. Debut, Brooklyn, Narrative, Venture, Boundless, Supply, Simple and Minimal have all been removed from the Theme Store and now return a not-found error. If you already have one installed it will keep running, but it is no longer receiving updates and you cannot install it on a new store. Dawn arrived as their replacement, and the Horizon collection has been added on top of it since.
Which free Shopify theme should I choose?
Start from what you sell rather than how the demo looks. Trade is the only free theme built for wholesale, Studio is built around artists and editions, Ride is built for sporting goods, and Savor and Taste are built for food and drink. If none of those describe you, Horizon is the safest general-purpose starting point, and Spotlight is the fastest to get live.

All Shopify themes works the same way and only design what makes them different. Also don’t look for niche specific themes as the only real difference are images that are used to showcase theme. Once you changes images with your images you will get a completely different look and feel. It might be a strange suggestion but just try some free theme to see that it actually works wonders.

I think you didn’t notice that post is divided in two parts. First part showcases free Shopify themes and after subtitle “The Best Premium Shopify Themes” you can see premium examples, so users can choose the right theme for them either free or premium one.
Not True. Alot of the ones under the Free heading are now paid.

Are these themes only for wordpress. can they be used on blogger?
Are you can see from the title of this post these are Shopify themes and they can’t be used for any other platform. If you are looking for WooCommerce themes for WordPress you should start your research here. In case you are using Blogger you are out of luck because it is a blogging platform and cannot be used for ecommerce.
No, these ones only can be used on WordPress, but u can find good e-commerce themes for blogger as well on “Blogger Templates websites like gooyaabi” or u can ask them to create “similar” templates to the ones from this list.
Anabelle theme has not been updated in a long time. They no longer support customizations. Also wishlist is no longer available and searching using a filter is non existent. Lastly there is an issuse with the variants and how they are displayed. For the Fluer de lis, there is some HTML code that is missing or broken that won’t allow me to upload it. And since it is a free theme the developers of said theme do not offer support.

Thank you for reporting it! We removed this theme from the list.
You should also look at Timber and Skeleton. Both appear to be no longer supported because of no Git updates in over a year. That means they probably don’t support the new sections feature.

Aigars, the theme Fashe download button does not work. I really wanted to try this theme. I found it on wordpress but not for shopify. Can you verify?

Hello, I tried to upload the theme ”Fashe” to my shopify store, but the upload failed because of these reasons:
”There is 1 error:
zip does not contain a valid theme: missing template “layout/theme.liquid”, missing template “templates/index.liquid”, missing template “templates/collection.liquid”, missing template “templates/product.liquid”, missing template “templates/page.liquid”, missing template “templates/cart.liquid”, and missing template “templates/blog.liquid”
Is there any way you can fix it?

Please unzip downloaded file first because it contains multiple files for demo and other things. Installation file is a separate one in the archive.

The products are not cliquable on this theme, i can just click on the products titles for see the product page, but how can i make for click on the image for go to the product page?

@Alessandro, Unzip the file you downloaded and navigate to ‘fashe-Shopify-theme’ folder, there you will see the fashe zip file. Upload the file and your are good to go
The Focus theme is very old from 2014 and is not downloadable except on request and is labeled use at your own risk.

Thank you for amazing suggestions for Shopify themes. I like how it shows premium themes as well so we can see how much more superior they are. I guess saving money, in this case, is not going to be an option.
In eCommerce as any other business, it requires a big investment, I was not successful when I had the free Brooklyn theme, I wasted time and money hiring freelancers to modify features, layout,…
Finally, I purchased Ella theme at 59$, this theme saved me time & money and due to it I could make a lot of sales, so I no longer believe in free themes.

why aren’t some of these themes listed on the Shopify theme store?
Some of them are just not distributed via Shopify platform but they still can be installed via youir store dashboard.

I love the Fashe theme, but it has slowed down my website speed tremendously. I was informed it doesn’t have lazy loading which official Shopify themes have. I know nothing about coding, but really want to continue using this theme. Will you assist or direct me to someone who can assist?
A great blog with a massive list of themes, Shopify store is easy to set up but selecting a good theme is not an easy job. a great theme is so important to represent the e-store.
