ABC Book is a free Shopify theme for bookshops and publishers. It shows the author and a star rating on every card, sells hardcover, paperback and audiobook as ordinary variants, and browses by genre — the things a book buyer actually needs, which no free theme in the Shopify Theme Store does.

The author is a field, not a footnote

Shopify’s product vendor is shown as the author under every title, and predictive search matches it — so someone who half-remembers a name still lands on the book. Star ratings come from the standard reviews metafield, so whichever review app you already use will light them up.

Browse the way people actually shop

Collection pages filter by genre, format and price through Shopify’s free Search & Discovery app, and the homepage grid gives each genre its own tab. Every tab is rendered with the page, so switching costs no request and works with JavaScript disabled.

Set up in three steps

No page builder, no licence key and nothing to compile.

1. Upload the zip

Online Store → Themes → Add theme → Upload zip file. Do not unzip it first.

2. Put the author in Vendor

The theme reads Shopify’s vendor field as the author, so nothing custom is needed.

3. Point the tabs at collections

Each homepage tab is one of your collections. Set them in the theme editor and publish.

Format as a variant

Star colour is a setting

Ratings get their own colour rather than inheriting body text, and can be switched off entirely.

Breadcrumbs everywhere

Every inner page carries a trail, marked up as BreadcrumbList so it can show in search results.

Questions

Is it really free?

Yes. No purchase, no subscription, no trial and no footer credit you have to pay to remove. The complete source is public on GitHub, so you can read exactly what you are installing before you install it.

Do I need a paid Shopify plan?

You need an active Shopify plan to publish any theme on a live store — that is Shopify’s charge, not ours. You can upload and preview it on a development store or during a trial at no cost.

How do I get the author to show?

Put it in the product’s Vendor field. The theme shows the vendor under the title on cards and on the product page, and predictive search matches it. You can switch it off under Theme settings → Product cards.

Where do the star ratings come from?

From Shopify’s standard reviews.rating product metafield, which is what review apps write to. A product with no rating simply does not render stars.

Do I need a page builder or any apps?

No. Sections and blocks are Shopify’s own, edited in the theme editor. Collection filtering uses Shopify’s free Search & Discovery app, which is optional, and there is no paid app the theme depends on.

Will updates overwrite my changes?

No. Shopify does not auto-update a theme uploaded from a zip. Releases are published on GitHub; updating means uploading the new version as a separate theme and moving your settings across, so nothing changes behind your back.
