Last couple of months i have been changing my site’s theme every week and i am still not satisfied, something is always missing. I think I saw here a theme or too that might finally be perfect for me. I will update soon enough.

    1. Kate,

If there is always something missing for themes you select then I would recommend some multipurpose theme because those themes have millions of options with limitless possibilities. You can start your research here.

  2. Hello Aigars? Thanks for sharing this list. Deciding on the best theme to use on a website can be a hard-nut-to-crack affair. Despite the suggestions in the list above am still finding it hard to decide which is the best theme I can use to create a website for article/web content writing that integrates e-commerce. Any suggestions?
Also a friend asked me to help him find a good theme for a small business that deals with designing brochures, business cards, posters, leaflets, catalogs etc.

  3. Greg Harding says:

Hi there, I’m looking for a portfolio theme to support my commercial photography business. I’m keen to move to a theme that’s easy to add word content as well as having a great photo gallery and large splash landing pages.
Can you suggest something that would be responsive and offer good SEO opportunities?
    Thanks in advance
    Greg

    1. Gre,

Oshine theme is going to be the right one for you. You can find more information about Oshine theme here.

  4. Pratik Sinha says:

I am currently using Parallax one page theme, but it is affecting my SEO tremendously. The bounce rate is not very encouraging and its seems that the content of the web pages (which are all unique) is not crawled by bots. I submitted my website to Google, Bing, Alexa, Yandex and few others, but still the results are not upto the mark as I would have liked it to be.

Kindly help me out with the problem.

    1. Pratik,

I am completely puzzled by your question. You offer SEO services but it appears that you have no idea about SEO at all.

SEO is and always have been about content. Yes, there are important things such as backlinks, on-page optimizations but if you don’t have content then nothing else matters. On your website, there are few over-optimized articles that will get penalized by Google as low content because they don’t offer any value to readers but are meant to get more visitors from search engines. Google is perfectly aware of that and it won’t take long until you claim that your website got hit by Panda, Penguin or another algorithm update.

Another thing is that your landing page doesn’t contain any valuable information at all that could be picked up and ranked high by Google. It would make no difference if your website is using parallax one-page structure or regular multi-page setup with no fancy effects. Your website could be used as the landing page when running AdWords or other PPC campaigns but for SEO it is a complete disaster. Dropping random keywords is not how the SEO works in 2016.

It is slightly tricky to track parallax and one-page website using Google Analytics is slightly different from regular websites but it takes minutes and not hours to tweak analytics to work with this kind of websites. Even Google offers its own tutorial on how you can track one-page applications and you can read more about it here.

Sorry about lengthy and rather negative responsive but I really hate when someone claims to offer some service but in fact have no idea what they are doing. You are basically trying to scam your clients. You put their website’s SEO at risk and even get paid while doing it. Not cool.

      1. Shahin Khourdepaz says:

Aigars, I actually loved your response and it was based on care and knowledge in order to assist so thank you fo ryour post and response, extremely informative.

      2. David Scarpitta says:

Aigars, I think that your response to that comment may be in the top 10 of all time that I’ve seen online. I love the “no holding back”. It’s a reminder to always be raising the bar.

        1. Thank you for your feedback! I highly appreciate it!

  5. Hello Aigars!

I loved this list. I’m just starting my personal website using WordPress after using Joomla! for a long time and I’m already loving the differences. I’ve decided to create a portfolio/about me website because of my increase in design and illustration works. From this list I liked: ananke, phoenix, alona, syntac and visia. Which one would you recommend? (Or if you have a better suitable option) 🙂

Thanks for the help, really liked your page.

    1. Gabriel,

My personal favorite are Borderland and Ronneby but your mentioned themes will get the job done for you as well.

  6. mike shalaby says:

    hi Greg
    very informative thread. ty.
im a home improvement contractor and would like to use tower portfolio width to lay out my finished jobs to people.
would this theme be suitable for seo?
i figured have a detailed description with each job image. . plus info content on the other pages .. all worded correctly.
will this be enough for the bot crawler to see me?

    tyvm,
    mike

    1. Mike,

There won’t be any problems for bots to crawl your website. Still you need to install some basic SEO related things such as XML sitemap to make it even easier for Google to crawl your website. We use Yoast SEO plugin for that but there are plenty of other great plugins to create XML sitemaps. Yoast SEO is difference because it comes with loads of other features to improve SEO.

  7. Hi Aigars! I enjoyed stumbling upon your post and loved many of the themes featured. I am a designer looking to revamp my website. I do not know even the simplest way to customize the code of any theme, therefore, I need something beautiful, functional and ready to use. My content features print, photography and video work, and I’d also like to have a blog. The norm with designers is to have a “grided’ theme, (á la Wonder or Doctype, for instance), but I’d like something different. Oshine really caught my eye, but I don’t know if it’d be the right choice. Any suggestions, advice or recommendations?

    Thanks!

    Maya

    1. Maya,

I would recommend to go with Oshine theme as it is the best selling portfolio theme on this list thanks to its flexibility and loads of ready made layouts that you can use as foundation for your website.

  8. Seriously? 99% grid design. i was hoping to get some different ideas here.

    1. sorry. its 99% “tiles” pictures organization design.

      1. Please let me know what kind of layout you are looking for and will give you some examples. We have listed mostly Masonry grid style layouts here because that’s what most users are after. If you need some parallax scrolling, horizontal sliding or other portfolio types there are this kind of options too. Just let me know more details and will be happy to help.

        1. Thoracius says:

I’m not sure what the grid style is called, but I’ve found examples called gridster.js or gridstack.js I like the idea of giving certain elements in the grid more real estate, and less important ones less real estate.

          1. Unfortunately, there are no WordPress themes that uses these libraries. There are certain themes that allows to create a bigger first post while keeping the same size but currently none of them offers an option to resize all posts differently. The reason behind this is limited WordPress core functionality that would make this kind of setup very complex. Hopefully, WordPress will evolve over time as I really like the idea behind this.

            1. Valerie Way says:

Thanks for broaching the subject of masonry design prevailing for portfolio themes. I’ve been trying to find some other options for quite a while as well. Thanks a lot as well for providing us with examples of other options (parallax scrolling/horizontal sliding). If it may be of help to someone else, I’ve discovered one example of alternative parallax scrolling theme called Artwork, however, I’ve never come across a proper horizontal sliding template.. It would be awesome if you could provide us with the themes of horizontal slide or non-grid layout in general

  9. Bilqees Kenchi says:

Great collection, I am looking one page wordpress theme for my profile on my site, please share some free themes with some attractive effects and color combination and please also want to ask something about SEO plugins, please tell me can I use two SEO plugins at same time. I want to use Yoast and Easy SEO plugins.

    1. Bilqees,

There is no need to use two SEO plugins at the same time. They does the same thing therefore two plugins are redundant. There are very free portfolio themes out there and none of theme looks stunning like ones that are listed above. If you still prefer free themes you might want to check this theme collection.

  10. Hi Aigars,

I need something that will showcase artwork, branding projects, graphic design, maybe some typography and a blog about these topics. What do you think would be the best theme to use?

    Thanks,

    K

    1. Karen,

You just described what this list is all about 🙂
My personal recommendations would be Kalium, KON/CEPT, Uncode and Ronneby. But other themes will get the job done for you as well, so feel free to choose the one you like from design perspective.

  11. md mahmud says:

Thanks for nice portfolio WordPress themes ideas share with us, i am seo marketer .i want start a portfolio site ,so your ideas i should apply to improve my business.

    1. I have already selected the best portfolio themes that are available today. Therefore you can feel free to choose the one that you like from design perspective.

  12. Anand Ujjwal says:

    Hey Aigars.

Thank you for this wonderful post. I am going through these themes and trying to find one that works for me, but I thought I’d seek your suggestion as well.

I have a small interior design business, with me being the sole designer and everything else. I want a portfolio website that is lightning fast to load and works great on both desktop and mobile. I can only display 3D renders of our work and usually only have two–three per project. I’d like to avoid a homepage that focuses on just one image and would ideally want visitors to be able to click on any project’s header image to open the rest of its images and a small description right there, with an animation, instead of going to a new page. I’d also want to prominently display my contact information.

I’m looking for a minimalist, modern theme that conveys that we are a small, independent firm with a starkly modern design aesthetic. Which theme would you recommend for me?

Hi, thanks for this great list. I bought Ananke last year and then had a few months where I didn’t have time to work on rebuilding my new site. But when I did get back to it, the support had ended and they wanted $30 for six months more support. Meanwhile, the Virtual Composer plugins never worked, and their API setup fails. I had numerous emails with them that made me go in a loop and now support isn’t available to me. I found the theme clunky to work with (I have years of WordPress experience) and perhaps it’s because it was my first parallax theme, but I also found their documentation really vague and unhelpful.

Now I am switching gears anyway to showcase my web sites, animation, video and photography – so which theme do you think would be worth my while? I feel sort of drawn to the minimalist ones. I am also a writer so I may want a blog that increasingly becomes the main focus or at least 50 percent of it. Thanks again for all you did on this, it’s very helpful.

    Mary

    1. Mary,

I’m sorry to hear about your bad experience with Ananke theme.
Initial purchase gives you 6 months of support and lifetime of updated which is not a short period of time at all. 95% of support questions are asked within first month after purchase. Afterwards almost no questions are asked because their websites are up and running. Your case is rather different but that’s not theme or support fault at all.

Visual Composer had problems with the latest version of WordPress and it was fixed shortly after the update but it is likely that theme developer didn’t care to update it and that’s a bad thing.

Thank you so much for this awesome list! My current website is pathetic and embarrassing because when I started my own interior design business a year ago, I didn’t have any portfolio photos to put on the website so I started with a blog to attract visitors. I am in the process of revamping, using my photos as the main attraction, rather than the blog. Do you have a couple recommendations in mind from this list that would work best for me?

I need my photos to be pinnable and I still want to continue with the blog.

    Thanks again!
    Heather

    Your Help would be Great
    Regards,

    1. Jazeb,

WordPress by default is SEO friendly therefore you can choose any WordPress theme listed above. For more advanced SEO options and more flexibility we recommend using some SEO plugin such as Yoast SEO.

  16. YellowandSour says:

    Dear Aigars,

I’m interested in having a full-screen slider front page (swipe not button), a transparent menu and a full-width masonry portfolio page. Single portfolio items should also be fullscreen with a provision for a caption and also space for project description. Here is the thing. I am a little worried about choosing between these themes because I have no idea what to expect regarding backend. I know that there are always elements to consider that are not apparent on the frontend. Which of these are the most user-friendly, developped, have wide compatibility and fulfill the design considerations I mention?

The themes are the following: Stockholm, Oshine, Bridge, Notio, Uncode, Salient Story

    1. Backend for all themes is literally the same. All of these themes are based on WordPress therefore you always get the same user experience. Themes that includes drag & drop page builders uses Visual Composer which will also look and work the same for all themes. The only difference might be between themes that use WordPress Customizer or Theme Options. However, you aren’t going to use them much as most of the things are done with your content and not options.

Also all of above listed themes comes with extensive documentation that will get you started in no time.

  17. Dear Aigars,

Thank you for the list. I found it very insightful. I am a content editor and a fashion illustrator, so I would love my website to showcase both my written work (blog) as well as incorporate my illustrations. The themes which stood out for me in particular were Kalium, Massive Dynamic (Portfolio-Agency), Charm (love it) and Pine Cone, but that’s merely from an aesthetic point of view. Which one would you recommend in terms of practicality? I’d want to keep it simple and straight forward as I’m no expert in all the gadgets and plug ins etc

Your help would be much appreciated!

    Thank you,

    Lina

    1. Lina,

Kalium, Massive Dynamic and Charm are great themes and you can’t go wrong by choosing any of them. All these themes are based on WordPress therefore setup for them is very similar with minor differences. Since you have already chosen WordPress from functionality perspective then now you can choose a theme from design perspective. That’s how it works these days. Functionality from WordPress and design from themes.

  18. Heather Fonseca says:

Thank you so much for this round-up of creative – portfolio sites. I’ve been using Woo Themes old Canvas theme but it’s just not cutting it. I hope one of these will work better for my website. Thanks.

    1. I remember using Canvas back in the days and I really liked that theme. However, it was 5 years ago when I stopped using it because there are now so many far superior themes out there that it doesn’t make sense to use theme which is around for 10 years without any real updates to its core.

  19. Hi Aigars!
Thanks for this list. I am an artist and interested in creating an portfolio site which I could sell my paintings and photographs on(seo is very important also). I was looking at wix, squarspace, and wordpress. I stumbled on your site! Do you have advice on which one is the best, and why?
    Merci,
    paim

    1. Paim,

There is no such thing as best theme but only the only you like the most. if there would be one best theme there wouldn’t be lists like these but just a single theme and thats it. All themes comes with WooCommerce integration that will help with ecommerce side of your website.

  20. Paul Hruza says:

    Hi Aigars,

Many thanks for putting this list together. It’s been really useful for me as I’ve been tasked by the wife to find a suitable theme for her art-based site. I envisaged the home page to have a portfolio of her work, but after reading your reply to someone earlier about SEO implications I’m not sure how to proceed. From your experience, do you think it is ok to have a portfolio of images on the home page, and then some relevant content below the fold? Themes such as Nordic don’t seem to cater for much content other than picture descriptions so I’m struggling to decide on the way forward.
Anyway, thanks again for a great post.

    1. Paul,

Content is the king in SEO therefore Nordic theme might not be the right one for you. However, it wouldn’t be too difficult to add text below the fold using some light HTML modification but that might not be the best solution for everyone.
When it comes to portfolio website SEO I would recommend to use detailed project descriptions for each of your portfolio items. Not all SEO traffic should go directly to your main page and inner pages can rank well on Google as well. For example our main page receives only 10% of all traffic where other websites gets 90% of their traffic to the main page. We don’t think that the main page should be the only page and we have done all possible SEO optimizations for every single page on our website and not just main page. Maybe it’s something you might consider doing for your portfolio website as well.

Let me know if you have any questions about SEO or WordPress and I will be happy to help.

  21. Aigars,

Just a brilliant post! Only problem I have now is choosing which theme out of all of these! Thank you and please keep up the great work! I’m am just starting out in blogging and I appreciate the help!

    -Jim

    1. Jim,

Unfortunately, you are in the wrong section. Above listed are portfolio themes that are good for showcasing your work online. You are looking for a blog theme and some of the best exampels can be found here.

  22. Hi Aigars,

I am just graduating university in industrial design, are there any themes on WordPress you would recommend for a personal portfolio?

    Thanks,

    1. Chris,

This is exactly what this list is for. My favorite themes are Unocde, Divi, Jevelin and Massive Dynamic

  23. I’ve been searching high and low for a theme that incorporates the shop inside the gallery for a photography website. I’d like customers to be able to click on an image from a gallery and have an option to add it directly to the cart instead of having to go back to the shop. Any recommendations on a theme or can this feature be added with code later?

  24. Oliver Odgaard says:

    Hi Aigars,

This is an awesome list. Thanks for making it easier to find the perfect portfolio for us creatives.

I know you probably hear from a ton of theme creators, so I’ll keep this short. I’m actually building my own theme, solely made for designers, and I would love to get your feedback on it. Would you mind if I send you the link?

  25. Hi Aigar, I am currently shopping for creative portfolio themes for Graphic Designers. I’m eyeing at the “Dalton” theme but I’m also wondering if you can recommend a free wordpress theme that’s similar to the Dalton theme. Or can you recommend a portfolio theme that’s moderm and unique please?

    Thanks in advance

  26. Late to the party on this post, but… silly question… how do I download the theme that is features as the first image on this page??? Im not finding a link!

  27. Owen Carver says:

I agree, Ronneby is one of my favorites here! I’m looking for a theme for my personal brand website. The minimal Corpus theme might good, but I can’t tell without demoing it first.

    1. You can check out their demo sites to get an idea what this theme is like. Due to WordPress licensing it is not possible to give away downloads for trial period.
Also, themes are all about design and you won’t see WordPress dashboard design completely transformed just because you install a theme. If you have used WordPress before you will still get the same functionality and design in the dashboard that you are already familiar with.

      1. Owen Carver says:

Good to know. Thanks a bunch! I’m looking to move my personal site OwenCarver.com from SquareSpace to WP self-hosted. The monthly cost for Squarespace isn’t worth it when you have 5 or 6 websites like I do. I’ve now rounded my options down to these 2 themes. Oshine and Brando Thanks again for your help!

  28. Hi Aigars,

I am a recent college grad looking to update my wordpress site theme. I want to build a website to showcase my work as a compliment to my paper resume while job hunting. The main sections of the site would be
    – Marketing Projects (large PDF books and one or 2 videos)
    – Examples of my photography/blogging work
    – An about/contact page

I want my theme to be clean, and support my creative and organized brain. I am looking for jobs in the marketing, specifically in the music industry. Any reccomendations would be greatly appreciated!

    1. You are not on WordPress.com which means you are limited to very few themes that this service offers or you have to upgrade to its expensive business plan in order to upload 3rd party themes.
If you are considering moving to a business plan or want to self-host your website you might choose any of above listed themes. My favorites for the task are Jevelin and Uncode.

  29. This is the most thorough description of themes I’ve seen, thank you! I wonder if you have done anything similar for the free WordPress.com themes. Everyone talks about WordPress.org but there are some of us troglodytes who don’t want to pay anything at all!

    1. Tini,

We haven’t covered WordPress.com themes for many reasons. Mainly because the selection is very limited and also their customization options are almost non existent due to limitations of the platform. Self-hosted WordPress themes are far more superior even simple ones like blog and portfolio themes since most comes wit drag & drop page builders.

  30. So many of these will be great for my portfolio. However, I’m looking for a design that will fit in with our basicParallax Frame Pro site that we are just starting for various fishing locations/destinations. I want to be different than the
typical travel site. Thanks for any input you can give as I’m a newbie to WordPress, but have been a designer for over 25 years.

  31. Mark Henry says:

    Hey there!
You have done marvelous job. These are brilliant themes indeed. Thanks for sharing.
I have also found Veriyas Pro, one of the best options for creating any professional business WordPress website. It comes with fully widgetized custom homepage, shortcodes, drop-down menu, video support, fully animated homepage and lots more fabulous features.

  32. Portfolio says:

All the collections are really helpful for the new WordPress user. This article is good also for me. I want to create a portfolio website very soon. Thanks for sharing this great collection of WordPress portfolio theme. My favorites for the task are Jevelin and Uncode.
