Started is a website template for design studios, small agencies and freelancers, built on Bootstrap 5 with a clean, minimal black-and-white design. The layout is responsive and works in all popular web browsers. It comes with six pages: home, portfolio, services, about, a project case study and contact.
The home page has a framed hero with a quote and a call to action, three service cards with icons, two project rows with photos and three client quotes. The portfolio lists four projects with client and year, the services page describes six services, the about page introduces the studio and its team, and the case study page shows how a single project is presented. The header has a Services drop-down menu, the footer has social links, and the contact page has a working contact form.
What’s new in 3.0
Bootstrap 5.3.8 (the earlier release used Bootstrap 4.5.0 and jQuery), compiled from Sass together with the theme and the original Bootstrap 4 proportions, and plain JavaScript with no jQuery. A keyboard-operable dialog replaces the off-canvas mobile menu, and the plugins the old build loaded but never used (jQuery UI, Owl Carousel, Slick, Fancybox, Magnific Popup, Stellar, AOS, MediaElement and a date picker) are gone. npm run build (Dart Sass and esbuild) compiles one minified stylesheet and one script.
Lighter pages: all the pages together went from 8.2 MB and 177 requests to 2.1 MB and 92 requests, and the home page from 1.5 MB and 34 requests to 0.4 MB and 16 requests. Every photo has an AVIF version with the JPEG as the fallback, real dimensions and lazy loading below the first screen.
No third-party requests: Oswald and Roboto Mono are self-hosted, the IcoMoon and Flaticon icon fonts are replaced by Lucide SVG icons and a 1.2 KB social-logo subset (the Twitter bird is now the X logo), and a Google Analytics 4 snippet stays commented out until you add your own ID. Before, every page loaded its web fonts from Google Fonts.
Working contact form: the form sends through php/send-email.php, with validation, a spam trap and an in-page message. Before, it had no action and three of its four fields had no name, so nothing could be sent.
Accessibility: a skip link and a main landmark on every page, one h1 per page with headings in order, a real menu button, a Services menu that opens from the keyboard (it opened on hover only), names on icon links, descriptive alt text, visible focus rings and WCAG AA text contrast, with a much darker body grey (the old one was 2.9:1 on white).
Fixed: links that went nowhere (the Services sub-menu, footer navigation, social links and case-study links), a form label pointing at the wrong field and a stray template-author sub-menu.
Demo content: a fictional studio, team, clients and quotes with distinct names, services and projects instead of repeated placeholders; the demo photos are replaced with Unsplash interior and furniture photos without brand markings, and the people are shown as initials avatars.
